Forums are Too Much Work!

I have started forums in the past, and failed most of the time. Last march, I started a localized niche forums, which is doing quite well. It currently is nearing 1600 members.

Unfortunately, the server load required me to bail out of my shared server, and rent a dedicated server at 1 and 1. This costs $108 a month, and I really only break even on the site.

It probably wouldn’t be so bad if I didn’t spend so much time on the site. I have a good team of mods, but still like to maintain control of day to day operations.

Despite the time requirements, I am pondering launching a large scale forums. I have an idea, and it will take a good amount of money to really set it off and get things going. I have not yet talked myself into taking this project on as I have recently been buying other smaller projects that need attention.

Hacked Again!

It seems as though my Blog-hints.com article site was hacked again. Several weeks ago, my database was hacked, and data was added so that visitors were redirected to another site. Now it seems as though it has happened again.

Here is a screenshot of a popup that occurs before redirect.

I am in the process of restoring the database and making some more security attempts.

Lesson Learned – Don’t Impulse Buy

Saturday, December 2nd, 2006

Several months ago, after I watched one of my coworkers browsing a joke site at work, I decided I needed one. I bought the domain funnyjokesite.net and bought a script to run on it.

The problem with this site, is there are about three hundred million others just like it. Aside from that, the script doesn’t support videos, and these days people want to watch videos, not read jokes. I guess this site could be successful if I poured massive amounts of time into it, but my interest just isn’t there. I’ll probably end up selling this one off before long.
