Drupal Backend is Awful!

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

I recently purchased two Drupal based websites. One of them is Pet Search Engine and is a real fix me upper.

As I went in the back end and was attempting to make changes, I was completely unimpressed with how the system works. It almost feels like they’re trying to do too much and leaves the administrator completely confused. I tinkered around for several hours and am still finding things.

The navigational system in there is bad also. In fact, I am so displeased with it, I am leaning towards scrapping the entire site and starting fresh with a Wordpress based site.

Forums are Too Much Work!

I have started forums in the past, and failed most of the time. Last march, I started a localized niche forums, which is doing quite well. It currently is nearing 1600 members.

Unfortunately, the server load required me to bail out of my shared server, and rent a dedicated server at 1 and 1. This costs $108 a month, and I really only break even on the site.

It probably wouldn’t be so bad if I didn’t spend so much time on the site. I have a good team of mods, but still like to maintain control of day to day operations.

Despite the time requirements, I am pondering launching a large scale forums. I have an idea, and it will take a good amount of money to really set it off and get things going. I have not yet talked myself into taking this project on as I have recently been buying other smaller projects that need attention.

Generic Search – What a Waste

Monday, December 4th, 2006

So many blogs and websites I come across that use a standard search bar to users to search their site. I admit, I have been just as guilty.

After I replaced many of my standard search bars with Google Search bars, my revenues have increased significantly.

When trying to earn a wage from websites, every little bit helps. This, in my opinion, is a far too valuable tool not to use.

If you aren’t signed up for Google Adsense, you’re missing the boat big time! Nearly all of my sites’ search bars have been replaced with the Google site search search bar.

Directory Promotion

Sunday, December 3rd, 2006

Today I took some time to make sure my directories were on the list provided by info.vilesilencer.com. I found that I hadn’t added all of them in, so I submitted.

The list they provide is an extensive list, downloadable in excel format. Here is the download link.

If you have a directory and want it added, you need to go to the forums and request inclusion.

There are many other lists out there, including one of my own directory listings.

Hacked Again!

Saturday, December 2nd, 2006

It seems as though my Blog-hints.com article site was hacked again. Several weeks ago, my database was hacked, and data was added so that visitors were redirected to another site. Now it seems as though it has happened again.

Here is a screenshot of a popup that occurs before redirect.

I am in the process of restoring the database and making some more security attempts.
